History

The law firm was initially established as Fredricks & von der Horst in 1996, founded by Dennis F. Fredricks and Rutger von der Horst. The partnership brought together Dennis F. Fredricks, a California attorney with a strong background in international business law, real estate, and commercial litigation, and Rutger von der Horst, a European lawyer specializing in media, communications, and intellectual property law. Based in Los Angeles and Germany, the firm was created to assist clients with legal matters spanning the United States and Europe, offering services tailored to businesses and individuals involved in cross-border dealings.

As the firm progressed into the 2000s, it expanded to meet the demands of a shifting economy. New practice areas were added, including technology law and international trade, reflecting the growth of these industries in California and globally. The firm took on cases involving software licensing agreements, trademark disputes, and compliance with cross-border regulations. To support this expansion, Fredricks & von der Horst grew its team, recruiting attorneys with expertise in litigation, business law, and immigration. The firm maintained its focus on delivering clear, effective solutions, which helped it retain clients and attract new ones, including media companies, tech startups, and foreign nationals seeking U.S. residency.

In 2025, attorney Daniel Schwarzl, with bar admissions in Austria, New York, and California, opened a new chapter for the firm which was renamed to Fredricks, Schwarzl & Von der Horst. Building on the firm’s established roots, Schwarzl introduced a focus on modern industries such as cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and venture capital, while preserving the firm’s tradition of serving clients with cross-border legal needs. His arrival brought additional expertise in startup counseling, technology law, and international regulatory compliance, reflecting the evolving demands of the 21st-century economy.

Over nearly three decades, Fredricks Law has handled thousands of cases, from routine business agreements to intricate litigation involving multiple jurisdictions. Its growth has been steady, driven by a commitment to client service and an ability to adapt to changes in law and industry. Today, the firm remains headquartered in California, serving as a hub for its work while addressing the legal needs of clients across the U.S. and internationally.
